LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson's death has been declared a homicide by Los Angeles coroners as they revealed the singer had a lethal cocktail of six different drugs in his body when he died.
Ending several weeks of feverish speculation following Jackson's sudden death in Los Angeles on June 25, the county coroner's office issued a brief statement Friday ruling that the superstar's death was unlawful.
The statement said that while "acute intoxication" from the powerful anesthetic propofol was the primary cause of death, Jackson, 50, had also suffered from the effects of other drugs in his system.
As well as propofol, powerful drugs including lorazepam, midazolam, diazepam, lidocaine and ephedrine were found in Jackson's body.
The coroner's statement said police investigators and public prosecutors had ordered that the full toxicology report concerning Jackson be withheld until further notice.
Jackson's family welcomed the findings.
"The Jackson family again wishes to commend the actions of the coroner, the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies, and looks forward to the day that justice can be served," the family said in a statement.
The coroner's announcement will fuel speculation that authorities are likely to charge Jackson's personal physician Conrad Murray in connection with the death. Cardiologist Murray was the last person to see Jackson alive.
A lawyer for Murray issued a statement in response to Friday's announcement, saying the coroner's release "contains nothing new."
"For two months we have been hearing the same information, usually from leaks out of the coroner's office," attorney Ed Chernoff said in a statement.
"One has to wonder why the coroner felt compelled to release anything at all if the police investigation is not yet complete."
According to court documents unsealed in Houston, Texas, on Monday, multiple drugs were administered to Jackson by Murray in the hours before his death.
Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran "reviewed the preliminary toxicology results and his preliminary assessment of Jackson's cause of death was due to lethal levels of propofol."
Murray administered propofol and other drugs to Jackson -- at the star's insistence -- to treat his insomnia, but was worried Jackson had developed an addiction and "tried to wean Jackson off of the drug," the affidavit said.
Propofol is a powerful anesthetic used to induce unconsciousness in patients undergoing major surgery in hospital. Medical professionals say it should never be used by private individuals at home.
The affidavit unsealed on Monday revealed that Murray told investigators two days after the star died that he had been giving Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol nightly during the six weeks prior to the event.
As part of their investigation, police and federal agents have already raided Murray's offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and Houston, Texas, as well as a Las Vegas pharmacy that provided the drugs.
Murray told investigators he was not the first doctor to administer propofol to the King of Pop, who referred to the drug as his "milk," LAPD detective Orlando Martinez wrote in the affidavit, citing the cardiologist.
Medical experts said the cocktail of drugs apparently given to Jackson was extremely dangerous and police would need to determine whether administering it was tantamount to medical negligence.
"If all of these drugs... are also shown, this would be a classical case of acute combined drug toxicity," forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht told CNN.
Jackson is to be buried at a cemetery in Glendale, California on September 3, his family announced last week. They had originally planned to bury him on Saturday -- the day he would have turned 51.

Ending several weeks of feverish speculation following Jackson's sudden death in Los Angeles on June 25, the county coroner's office issued a brief statement Friday ruling that the superstar's death was unlawful.
The statement said that while "acute intoxication" from the powerful anesthetic propofol was the primary cause of death, Jackson, 50, had also suffered from the effects of other drugs in his system.
As well as propofol, powerful drugs including lorazepam, midazolam, diazepam, lidocaine and ephedrine were found in Jackson's body.
The coroner's statement said police investigators and public prosecutors had ordered that the full toxicology report concerning Jackson be withheld until further notice.
Jackson's family welcomed the findings.
"The Jackson family again wishes to commend the actions of the coroner, the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies, and looks forward to the day that justice can be served," the family said in a statement.
The coroner's announcement will fuel speculation that authorities are likely to charge Jackson's personal physician Conrad Murray in connection with the death. Cardiologist Murray was the last person to see Jackson alive.
A lawyer for Murray issued a statement in response to Friday's announcement, saying the coroner's release "contains nothing new."
"For two months we have been hearing the same information, usually from leaks out of the coroner's office," attorney Ed Chernoff said in a statement.
"One has to wonder why the coroner felt compelled to release anything at all if the police investigation is not yet complete."
According to court documents unsealed in Houston, Texas, on Monday, multiple drugs were administered to Jackson by Murray in the hours before his death.
Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran "reviewed the preliminary toxicology results and his preliminary assessment of Jackson's cause of death was due to lethal levels of propofol."
Murray administered propofol and other drugs to Jackson -- at the star's insistence -- to treat his insomnia, but was worried Jackson had developed an addiction and "tried to wean Jackson off of the drug," the affidavit said.
Propofol is a powerful anesthetic used to induce unconsciousness in patients undergoing major surgery in hospital. Medical professionals say it should never be used by private individuals at home.
The affidavit unsealed on Monday revealed that Murray told investigators two days after the star died that he had been giving Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol nightly during the six weeks prior to the event.
As part of their investigation, police and federal agents have already raided Murray's offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and Houston, Texas, as well as a Las Vegas pharmacy that provided the drugs.
Murray told investigators he was not the first doctor to administer propofol to the King of Pop, who referred to the drug as his "milk," LAPD detective Orlando Martinez wrote in the affidavit, citing the cardiologist.
Medical experts said the cocktail of drugs apparently given to Jackson was extremely dangerous and police would need to determine whether administering it was tantamount to medical negligence.
"If all of these drugs... are also shown, this would be a classical case of acute combined drug toxicity," forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht told CNN.
Jackson is to be buried at a cemetery in Glendale, California on September 3, his family announced last week. They had originally planned to bury him on Saturday -- the day he would have turned 51.

Almost running on a parallel track were the Osmunds. The cheerful Osmunds recorded many interesting tracks at that time. A track titled "Puppy Love" recorded by Donny Osmund was the focus of many a disk jockey on our radio stations. Frequently comparing it with Michael Jackson's "Ben," whenever one of those tracks were played on the air, we were certain the other would follow.
Then something inevitable happened. Michael Jackson's voice cracked. Too bad! He lost that childish voice. That childish voice which launched "Ben" was no more. What was in store for him?
Well, he was already established and recognised as a musician. So he continued as a solo artist. Gradually reached superstar status collecting millions of fans from all the countries in the world.

Nobody expected him to die early. At the age of 50, most people usually start living their dreams. He was an icon to many, an inspiration to me. Living his dreams at the age of 8, being labeled as the ‘King of Pop’.

“Dr Murray, who is Jackson's personal physician, has admitted giving the fallen King of Pop a cocktail of drugs, including propofol (Diprivan), an operating room anaesthetic, in an attempt to cure insomnia.
During his interview with detectives, it is alleged Dr Murray said Jackson "was very familiar with the drug (propofol) and referred to it as his 'milk'."
The drug has a milky appearance. He also said he suspected Jackson received drugs from other doctors after observing needle marks on the singer's hands and feet.
Dr Murray told police he had been giving Jackson propofol for about six weeks intravenously, along with other drugs, because the singer needed powerful drugs just to sleep.
He became concerned about the possibility of addiction to propofol and decided to wean Jackson off the drug. For two nights before the death, he administered a different drug cocktail and Jackson was able to sleep.
But the night before his death, Dr Murray gave Jackson Valium at 1am and stayed beside him all night, trying different drugs to induce sleep. Finally, at 10.40am, he relented and gave Jackson propofol.
"After approximately 10 minutes, Murray stated he left Jackson's side to go to the restroom," it's alleged the physician told police. "Murray stated he was out of the room for about two minutes maximum. Upon his return, Murray noticed that Jackson was no longer breathing."
Dr Murray mixed drugs such as lorazepam (Ativan) and Valium, which dramatically slow down a person's breathing.”

Dr. Conrad Murray, personal physician for Michael Jackson, is shown in this undated publicity photograph released to Reuters August 18, 2009. The coroner investigation into Jackson's death found he had lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol in his body, and Murray told detectives he gave Jackson the drug to treat insomnia, He said he had given him the medication in the past, but was trying to wean him off of the drug, fearing that he was developing an addiction. Murray said he gave Jackson a series of medications over the course of that night because the singer could not sleep. According to court documents, Jackson repeatedly demanded the propofol, which he referred to as his "milk," and Murray finally agreed. Murray told investigators he left Jackson for about two minutes to go to the bathroom, and when he returned, he found Jackson not breathing. Investigators are trying to determine if charges are warranted against Murray or other doctors who may have prescribed or administered the medication, which is usually used only in hospitals during surgery. Murray's home in Las Vegas and offices in Nevada and Houston have all been searched in recent weeks by Los Angeles police and federal agents. Previous court filings from those searches indicated that investigators were conducting a manslaughter investigation. Murray has denied any wrongdoing, saying he did not administer any medications that should have led to the singer's death. Murray's attorney, Edward Chernoff, issued a statement on Friday, saying the coroner's announcement is "nothing new," and questioned why any announcement was made while the autopsy remained sealed. "In any case, this has all the earmarks of police gamesmanship, and we will not be responding until we get a full autopsy report, including the entire list of drugs found in Mr. Jackson, their quantities and all other data that would allow independent medical experts to analyze and interpret."
